Track voice-over takes offline
Keep the operational record beside the DAW while scripts and audio stay on your device.
Why filenames alone are not enough
A folder may show take numbers but not which script revision was read, why an alternate exists, whether a pickup superseded it, or which take the performer intended to deliver.
Log the minimum useful record
For each take, capture cue, session, ordinal, optional duration metadata, a short neutral note, rating, and specific flags. Avoid turning notes into unverified quality judgements.
Choose deliberately
Select one current take only after review in the recording environment. The slate preserves alternatives and marks a selection stale when its cue later changes.
Worked example
In the sample, cues one to thirty-six have three takes each and the rest have two, giving two hundred and thirty-six take records across three sessions. Take 2 is the selected read for almost every cue, take 1 is marked first pass, take 3 is marked alternate ending. The alternates are still there, still numbered, still attached to their session and their cue revision.
Cue C055 is the instructive one. Its selection was cleared, so the cue is required and has takes but has no current read. A folder of files would show three plausible WAV files for C055 and give no hint that nobody has chosen between them.
Method
A take record carries the cue, the exact cue revision, the session, an ordinal, optional duration metadata, a rating, specific flags such as pace or alternate, a short neutral note, and the expected filename derived from the active naming profile. Selecting a take clears the previous selection for that cue and leaves every alternative intact.
Takes are logged after the recording software stops, not during. The desk is a ledger beside the DAW, not a competitor to it.
What this does not do
- It does not listen to the take or judge the read.
- Ratings and flags are your own shorthand and carry no defined meaning to a recipient.
- A logged take is not proof that a matching audio file exists.
Do this in the app
Log the minimum useful record while the session is still fresh.
- Open station 04 Takes and add one record per attempt with a neutral note.
- Select exactly one take per required cue, after review in your audio software.
- Scan for required cues with no current selection before you leave the station.
